HARTLEY MAUDITT

The abandoned village of Hartley Mauditt has sat empty for hundreds of years. No one knows why the village was abandoned and St Leanards Church a remaining building from the pre-18th century village, has gained notoriety for being haunted in recent years.

People have seen apparitions of the lady of the house and her coach and horses, pass close to the church.

ST MARY’S CHURCH

Regarded as the most haunted church in Wales, the medieval St. Mary's Church was rumoured to have been burnt down by a "demonic fire" in 1977, caused by occult groups practicing satanic rituals and witchcraft.

Sinister and malicious Shadow People have been noted as lurking in the shadows here by multiple paranormal teams.

BOX HILL

Box Hill in Dorking appears to be a paranormal beacon of some kind, with various different accounts spread out across its hilltop.

The first spirit is that of an eccentric sword-wielding officer, Major Peter Labelliere. He roams by his grave upon the hill, where he was buried upside down and had his landlords son dance upon his coffin. People believe this unusual burial disturbing the body and has trapped his soul to haunt here.

Online ghost hunting channel Fantasma House Paranormal have also reported compelling evidence that Box hill fort is haunted by the spirits of dead soldiers. With my research into the history of the hill, the obituaries surrounding the hill do seem to support this.

It has been known recently for Skinwalker videos, popping up on Youtube and Tiktok.

BETCHWORTH CASTLE

Betchworth castle, only a short drive away from Box Hill is haunted by a black shuck that only prowls the ruins at night, growling to those who visit.

The Lord of the Manor, "Lord Hope" is meant to still wander the castle in grief over the accidental killing of his son, thinking him a convict.

FARINGDON FOLLY

Faringdon Folly in Oxfordshire is haunted by dancing ghosts that appear on moonlit nights. It has seen battle over the years, being the site of multiple hill forts and the standing ground of Oliver Cromwells men to bombard the town.

When the tower was built years later, multiple bodies where unearthed; and it is thought many still remain beneath the hill.

BROADMOOR WOODS

Next to Berkshire's Broadmoor Hospital, the oldest high-security psychiatric hospital in the UK, sits Broadmoor woods; a dense woodland with a plethora of ghostly stories over many years that has gained it a superstition for being haunted.

Notable ghost hotspots are that of the Devil's Highway - an ancient Roman road that runs parallel to the old hospital and Caesar's camp - an old iron age hillfort where people have heard many strange noises in recent years.

KNOWLTON CHURCH AND EARTHWORKS

Knowlton Church and Earthworks has been a hotspot for local folklore and legends since the decimation of Knowltons population during the black plague.

There appear to be two main spirits that have been logged recently.

One is that of a tall menacing figure in black. The other is that of a lady in a white dress. Both have been captured on film many times by various different paranormal groups.

CAMLET MOAT AND WOODS

A ghost lurks the moat and woods here wearing a suit of armour and a scarlet cloak. The figure could be that of Geoffrey de Mandeville, who hid his treasure in a deep well when he was accused of treason in the 12th century. However, he fell into the well and drowned when he fell from a tree.

Finally, in the area of the moat, an old lady who limps around with the aid of a stick has been seen. It has been said that she is a witch who was executed.

Rye House Gatehouse is known to be haunted by the ghost of an armed night watchman who has been seen photographed inside and outside the building. The atmosphere it creates is so oppressive that mediums in the past have had to run outside to vomit.

HAUNTED ANTIQUES MUSEUM - PARANORMAL RESEARCH CENTRE

The Haunted Antiques Museum is one of the largest collections of haunted artifacts in the world. The building itself dates back to the 19th Century but the beams inside are said to date back to the 16th Century.

Notable haunted antiques: A wheelchair that moves by itself, dolls which talk and move at night, and a handful of cursed objects which stay with you long after you visit the museum.

SHAW HOUSE

A large Elizabethan manor that is said to house many different spirits. A grey lady that appears on the grand staircase, running footsteps down the gallery corridor, and strange balls of blue light that have appeared in the upper floors.

There is also a story ofa former house maid that died from a tunnel collapse, where you can still hear her ghostly screams - though the location of the tunnel (apparently stretching from Shaw House to Donnington Castle) have not been found.

People from the local town died from smallpox and it was blamed on four ladies who were branded as witches, named the Hansel sisters. They were dragged to the woods and bludgeoned before being buried separately, from which large birch trees grew.

They are said to still haunt here, and people still travel to pay tribute to them and hang ‘clooties’ upon the branches.

An abandoned school house stands where a murder happened, with the victim still haunting the building. People have heard coughing, voices and loud marching sounds.

OLD THUNDRIDGE CHURCH TOWER - “COLD CHRISTMAS CHURCH”

Cold Christmas Church is infamous for the tragic story of the children who perished during a cold snap and were buried in the church graveyard, with their spirits reportedly haunting the church.

Adding to the eerie atmosphere, there are rumors that the church was built on a north/south alignment, a deviation from the typical east/west alignment of medieval churches and considered a sign of the devil. Some believe this may have attracted witches and devil worshippers to the site.

MINSDEN CHAPEL

The Chapel is rumored to be haunted by a phantom monk and a murdered nun. Witnesses have reported seeing glowing figures and hearing faint music. The site is still active today, with orbs frequently captured on camera and stones thrown at walls.

In the early 20th century, the site was leased by historian Reginald Hine, who issued a warning to trespassers and claimed he would haunt the chapel after his death.

THE HOLY GHOST RUINS

The burial place of a Mrs Blunden, who got buried alive in 1674.

She had drunk poppy water instead of wine, which put her into a coma. She was buried that day before the hot summer could affect her body. Upon being dug up later - they found a struggle in her coffin.

Children can hear her struggle beneath the ground to this day.

Racton Ruin

An 80 foot folly built in 1772.

Used as a site of cults and devil worship for over 100 years. In 1800s it was used as a brothel and has also been the site of a few suicides.

Its been known to have bricks thrown at you and ghostly woman walking around the base of the building, and a ghostly face seen though the windows.

People have been known to be physically harmed at this site.

West Kennet Long Barrow

The West Kennet long barrow is a Neolithic tomb. Over 50 individuals found their resting here.
It also claims to have one of the oldest hauntings in the country, a man dressed in a white robe.

People have reported intense feelings of dread when inside the tomb. Some have seen figures moving therein and the faint sound of whispered voices.

One unlucky visitor had been exploring the inside, when all of sudden she was grabbed by unseen hands which attempted to pull her in.

One of Britain’s most haunted pubs. Built above an ancient well and sat within an ancient stone circle.

There are more than five ghosts which reside in the Red Lion pub.

The most active is Florrie, who was murdered by her husband. The story goes that Florrie was having an affair and when her husband found out, he was furious and strangled her.

Donnington Castle

The castle served of great importance during the English Civil War. From July 1664, it withstood 20 months of constant siege from parliamentarian forces until King Charles I himself repelled the attackers.

It's no surprise that a number of ghostly sightings have been reported there, including persistent reports of a white spectral dog and a guard keeping watch at the gatehouse to this day.

Built in 1874, Combe Down Tunnel was the longest, unventilated train tunnel in Britain. Because of this, the crew of a freight train passed out with the fumes, killing 3 people.

Wychwood Forest

Amy Robsart died on the 8th of September 1560, her neck broken. Robert Dudley, her husband, was widely suspected to have orchestrated his wife's demise.

Soon after her death, she appeared to him while he was hunting in Wychwood Forest, dying 10 days after from a terrible illness.

It is said anyone who sees her befalls a similar fate.
